Prep School Life

Preparatory School

Our prep is a true delight.  Nestling within the main school but with its own facilities, it offers a truly family experience for children from 2.5 years.  We pride ourselves in offering pupils a child-centred, dynamic and inspiring education with a strong focus on providing a nurturing, caring environment and approach.

At Foundation Phase (Rising 3s, Nursery, Year 1-2), children explore learning through play and experience with a focus on ‘first-hand’ practical learning. Following the children’s interests and curiosities are also a central part of how we shape the curriculum in the early years.

The two classes that form the Foundation Phase are Puffins (Nursery and Reception) and Owls (Year 1-2). Both classes are supported by highly skilled learning support assistants and children are taught in small groups, in particular daily phonics and reading. Our dedicated team of teachers support new families joining the school, tailoring the transition approach for each individual.

There is a strong focus on developing a love of learning and there’s always lots of singing and happy little voices engaged in activities. The children also have a wonderful opportunity to develop learning outdoors and bring the knowledge, skills and understanding from the classroom to Outdoor School.

Spanish is taught as a second language and children fully embrace using incidental Spanish throughout the day using songs, dance and movement. Many, if not all, children are completely new to learning Spanish, developing confidence quickly through the lively and engaging learning approach.

Teachers work closely with parents to communicate children’s learning journey and progression steps with open mornings, one to one parent meetings throughout the year and daily discussions with an open door policy.

At Key Stage 2 (Year 3-6), children are taught in small classes ensuring greater opportunity to receive personalised guidance in learning and a curriculum tailored to the needs of the child. Our teaching staff continue to work closely with each family and are highly skilled and qualified. Developing independence and a growth mindset in achieving their full potential is an important part of the approach to learning in the second phase of the prep school. We place great importance on feeling happy and excited to learn and our pastoral care ensures children feel safe, supported and confident to try something new.

To further equip our pupils in future academic, co-curricula and opportunities outside school, we follow a virtues and character education program across the Prep school. This encompasses moral, civic, service and performance character virtues and supports children develop emotionally, socially, spiritually and academically.

Our curriculum is taught through a cross-curricular approach through themes inspired by children’s interests. Discrete lessons in literacy, Spanish, maths, science and sport ensure key skills, knowledge and understanding are taught to a high level and children master transferable skills to learning in humanities and expressive arts.

Weekly Outdoor School days form a highlight of the week; the Prep visit our fantastic woodland site with a dedicated log cabin classroom and work with our outdoor specialist alongside class teachers. This opportunity enables learning from the classroom to come alive and helps children to gain invaluable experience in practical projects including incorporating STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths). In school, pupils also benefit from being taught by specialist teachers for science in the senior labs. We also work closely with the senior school to widen opportunities for pupils to further skills and experiences. Drama and Music is taught by our enthusiastic specialist staff.

This fabulous curriculum is excellent preparation for those joining our senior school but equally prepares those moving further afield for boarding provision or those entering the local state system. A visit to get a true sense of how your child/ren will be stretched yet nurtured, challenged and supported is strongly recommended.

Curriculum

At Castle School, we are continually aiming to capture the excitement and imagination of our pupils through an inspiring curriculum. We are fully committed to nurturing the educational journey of each child and shape the curriculum to support academic growth and success whilst ensuring the curriculum is broad and balanced.

We follow the Welsh National Curriculum at both foundation phase and Key Stage 2, supporting transition and future learning throughout the school. Our curriculum is taught through a cross-curricular approach through themes inspired by children’s interests. Discrete lessons in Literacy, Spanish, Maths, IT, science and sport ensure key skills, knowledge and understanding are taught to a high level and children master transferable skills to learning in humanities, expressive arts and technology.

Embracing challenge and developing a growth mindset, ensures all pupils realise their potential and have high expectations for themselves. The character virtues curriculum supports this approach and enables pupils to understand the character virtues which they need to focus on in order to be the best they can be.
